Beginning this year and using CIS SWREG, there is now a variety of pricing
options--beginning at only $10.00 (see below). Previously, this required
order by snail-mail.

If you're on the Internet and don't have Compuserve access, particularly
when you're international, perhaps a friend does. You could send payment
to your acquaintence and let him or her place the order. The process will
still allow the disk or validation (EMail) to be sent directly to you with
no delay. In addition, bank drafts in US$ are available in most countries
in Europe (there's usually a premium though which will cost the equivalent
of three or four extra dollars).

To register on Compuserve just issue the command:

	GO SWREG

SWREG will present a menu (note our keyword "U4")

	1) Select "Register Shareware" (2nd line down)
	2) Click "Proceed" (go on to next panel)
	3) Select your Country (go on to next panel)
	4) Click "Keyword" & select...
a). enter just "U4" in the resulting (keyword) panel
	   b). click OK
	5) (back to same panel as before)
Click "Display Selection Titles" (towards bottom)

All price combinations will be listed along with registration IDs.

	6) Select the one that suits your needs, read description, and
	   register if appropriate.

(It might help to have the above printed or available before issuing the
GO SWREG.)

ALTERNATIVELY..,.from the list below, choose the proper registration
number and enter it in the Registration ID# field (instead of choosing
"Keyword").
					       Registration ID#
U4.1 Full package - 13 programs on disk - $35 14278
U4.2 Full validation only - $24 14279
U4.3 Full val. w/out ChessU3 & ChessU4 - $19 14280
U4.4 4 prog/validations (your choice) - $16 14281
U4.5 ChessU3 & ChessU4 only validation - $13 14282
U4.6 NORMAL val. (or other single prog) - $10 14283
U4.7 Full Update (former validation) - $10 14347

Internet note: prices also apply to mail-order (US$ only, check, money
order, or international bank draft). A bank draft is the best option from
Europe. These are available from your bank for about a $3 or $4 premium.

Where a choice (above) is involved using SWREG--items 4 & 6--you will be
contacted to make your selection. (If not SWREG, please specify with your
order.) All other validations are sent as soon as notification of your
registration is received. Similarly, item 1 is mailed upon notification,
and an immediate validation is sent EMail.

ChessU3 & ChessU4 are not available under items 4 & 6 (select item 5
instead--or items 1 or 2).

Note: If you purchased a full validation within the past year and a half,
you can also obtain a 1997 registration at no cost. Just EMail
      me a note requesting a validation (70641.3236@compuserve.com).
Be sure to enclose your current validation (2 lines).

A full validation purchased prior to July 1995 can be extended for
1997-series programs with an SWREG "Full Update" - $10 (see above).

Win3.1 and Win95
----------------
This section applies to installation procedures for any "U4" shareware
program.

For specific information on operating CHESSU3.EXE, see the file
READMEU3.TXT.

If using File Manager, make sure the current directory is set to that of
the executing .EXE.

With Win95 use of desktop icons, be sure to set the "Start in" directory.
This can be done by right-clicking the icon to select Properties, then
selecting the second tab shortcut.

Right clicking seems to solve many Win95 situations, including the task bar..

For Norton Desktop you should also set the Start-up directory for any U4
desktop icon.

Installation
------------
Beginning with the series of U4 uploads posted on or after January 12,
1997 there are some considerations involved in installing programs which
have been downloaded since the programs will recognize each other and
object to old or unvalidated versions. It's best to install all new
programs in a single directory. It will help if the directory is free and
clear.

Important: unless you are already registered, remove any old U4 shareware
programs from your system.

New downloads are for evaluation purposes only and will typically expire
in 60 days. Please register (see above) whenever you intend to keep a
program.

It is important that a first installation be carried out correctly and it
is recommended that a new directory be created for all new U4 downloads as
the installation procedure for the first program will "object" if it finds
old or unvalidated copies of other U4 programs already on the system. Once
the first program is installed things become less critical--but remember
to always replace any old keyfile (U4KF.txt) with the new keyfile that
came with the (next) program downloaded and installed.

Likewise, after unzipping, programs should be "moved," not copied.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
Typical first-installation procedures to avoid problems:

	NORMAL.ZIP downloaded from Net

	    > move normal.zip c:\cleandir\normal.zip
	    > cd\cleandir
	    > pkunzip normal.zip

		*OR*

NORMAL.ZIP unzipped in any directory, then, from the directory...

	    > move normal.exe c:\cleandir\normal.exe
	    > move u4kf.txt c:\cleandir\u4kf.txt
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
Using an entirely empty directory is not necessary if there are no other
U4 programs already on the directory. Also, once the first U4 program has
been installed, other U4 installations can follow. Just remember to "move"
(if necessary) -- not "copy" -- and use the latest keyfile.

You will find the U4 system much easier to use if all programs are in a
single directory.
